ICD-10-BE refresher course
Pathophysiology
A training course in medical coding within ICD-10-BE on the theme of pathophysiology focuses on deepening the medical knowledge needed to accurately code diagnoses according to the Belgian ICD-10-BE guidelines.
The training covers the underlying disease mechanisms of important organ systems, such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological and endocrine systems, and explains how these processes translate into clinical symptoms, diagnostic findings and final coding choices. Participants learn how pathophysiological concepts help to distinguish between primary and secondary diagnoses, determine comorbidities and identify complications.

Participants may submit questions and practical cases related to the theme to fien.neirynck@t-h-e-institute.org by 15 March at the latest. These will be discussed in class during the lesson.

Lecturer: Dr Christophe Fierens
Date: 2 April 2026, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: RodeBol Events, Sint-Denijslaan 485, 9000 Ghent
Cost: €220

ICD-10-BE refresher course
Gastrointestinal procedures
During this refresher course, participants will learn how to correctly register diagnoses and procedures in the gastrointestinal domain according to ICD-10. The course provides an overview of common GI disorders, the relevant coding rules and how clinical documentation — such as endoscopy and surgical reports — is interpreted.

The coding of typical GI procedures, including endoscopies, polypectomies and various surgical procedures, is also covered. Through practical case studies, participants practise applying the correct codes and recognising common pitfalls.
Participants can submit questions in advance that they encounter in practice, so that these can be discussed and resolved during the training course.

Lecturer: Dr Karen Pien
Date: 18 June 2026, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: RodeBol Events, Sint-Denijslaan 485, 9000 Ghent
Cost: €220

Neurology and Neurosurgery
The ICD-10-BE neurology and neurosurgery refresher course focuses on the correct coding of disorders and procedures of the nervous system.
The course covers important neurological diseases such as strokes, epilepsy, degenerative and inflammatory disorders, and teaches participants how diagnostic findings such as imaging and EEG influence coding choices.

For neurosurgery, procedures on the brain and spine, tumour resections, shunt placements and decompressions are covered, with a focus on main procedures, additional procedures and complications. Students practise with ICD-10-BE structures, inclusion and exclusion notes, and Belgian coding modifiers, and learn to interpret complex cases correctly in order to code accurately and in accordance with the guidelines.

Participants may submit questions from their practice up to two weeks before the start of the refresher course. These will be discussed in class during the lesson.

THE Institute also organises ICD-10-BE refresher courses in Liège. The language of instruction for these refresher courses is French.

The refresher courses are intended for medical coders who already have some work experience.
In addition, THE Institute organises an annual starter class for beginners.
