The implications of the reform of the hospital landscape for physicians
The Belgian hospital landscape is on the verge of significant reforms. Recently, recommendations were formulated on behalf of the Interministerial Conference on Public Health (IMC) aiming for a thorough redesign of healthcare organization, including, among other measures, the establishment of local medical centers.

At the same time, the coalition agreement announces further structural reforms, including a revision of the nomenclature and hospital financing, as well as the development of a regulatory framework for private clinics. These policy choices raise fundamental questions about the organization of care, the relationship between public and private actors, and the professional status of physicians.

In practice, we also see that many physicians are considering (partial) employment outside the traditional hospital setting. At the same time, private equity interest in medical practices and private clinics is growing. These developments raise important legal and ethical questions regarding professional autonomy, governance, funding, and shareholder structures within healthcare institutions.

In this webinar, Prof. Stefaan Callens, a lawyer and expert in health law and healthcare organization, analyzes these developments from a legal perspective. He provides a structured reflection on topics including:
-
The proposals for reforming the hospital landscape commissioned by the IMC
-
The impact of these reforms on the status of hospital physicians
-
Government subsidies for hospitals and private clinics
-
Professional autonomy of physicians in private healthcare structures
-
The role of private equity in healthcare institutions and potential shareholder structures in private clinics
-
The consequences of the nomenclature reform
-
Co-governance and the role of physicians in hospital management
Target audience
This webinar is aimed at physicians, whether or not they work in a hospital setting. It provides doctors with a clear legal framework to better understand ongoing and planned reforms and to critically assess their own position within a changing healthcare landscape.
Of course, the content may also be of interest to hospital executives, board members, administrative staff, or other healthcare professionals who wish to gain insight into the reforms of the hospital landscape.
