From Policy to Practice
SNOMED CT in Belgian Healthcare
Two study days on the future of health data in Belgium
Belgian healthcare is facing a major digital transformation. Not only has the Belgian government set clear goals and priorities through the e-Health Action Plan, but the European Health Data Space (EHDS) also defines clear deadlines: by 1 January 2029, Belgium must be able to exchange health data in a standardised and secure way with other European countries. Considerable work has already been done in recent years to make this possible, but there is still much to be done.
The key to enabling the storage and sharing of health data? SNOMED CT, an international standard for clinical terminology that appears to play a central role in this story.
But what exactly is SNOMED CT? How does it work? Will healthcare professionals need to use it in daily practice? What does the roadmap towards implementation look like? And how can the sector prepare?
We aim to address these questions through two study days.
We will provide an overview and explanation of all relevant regulations, plans, and ongoing projects related to digital health data. The programme includes, among others, a session on the European Health Data Space (EHDS), the Belgian Integrated Health Record (BIHR), the e-Health Action Plan, and SNOMED CT.
On day two, we focus entirely on SNOMED CT. We will present the roadmap towards implementation, discuss its implications for Belgian healthcare professionals, and share case studies from both national and international practice.
