Concepts of hospital financing, hospital legislation and financial management
The hospital landscape is becoming increasingly complex, and insights into financing, registration, and quality indicators are essential for making well-considered strategic decisions.

During this training, you will gain insight into how data registration is directly linked to the Budget of Financial Resources, quality of care, and policy development. We provide you with practical tools to use this data strategically within your role as a staff member.

The training consists of two full training days, which together form a coherent program but can also be attended separately.
Training days and Modules
Training day 1
Training Day 1 will take place on 22 April 2026 and consists of three modules:
-
09:00 – 12:00 MG-MZG
-
13:00 – 15:00 Pharmacy
-
15:00 – 16:00 Quality Square

MG-MZG

Lecturers

Frederic Vanswijgenhoven is an expert in hospital financing at Jessa Hospital and a researcher at Ghent University and Vlerick Business School, focusing on efficiency in hospitals.

Nathalie Baillieul is a manager at Hict .
Pharmacy
This module provides an explanation of the pharmaceutical lump sum, how it is linked to admission data and prescribing behavior, and why accurate registration is essential for sound financing. It includes feedback on practical challenges and opportunities for optimization.

Subsequently, the session delves deeper into the materials lump sum (formally: the lump sum for invasive medical devices). This is divided into several categories, and the various aspects of each are explained.

Finally, the module focuses on an example of feedback reporting for physicians, aimed at facilitating harmonization and mapping the financial impact of the lump sums.
Lecturer
Marian Blanckaert is a hospital pharmacist at AZ Ostend.

Quality parameters
Quality square
Analysis of mortality, potentially preventable complications, and readmissions using MZG data, including the use of tools such as the Global Trigger Tool. The focus is on translating data into targeted quality improvement initiatives.
Lecturer

Nathalie Baillieul, manager at Hict
Training day 2
Training Day 2 will take place in June 2026 and consists of two modules:
09:00 – 12:00 VG-MZG
13:00 – 16:00 NRG model

VG-MZG
Exploration of nursing registrations, care episodes, and care intensity (TOT points), and their impact on time groups and care groups. The module also provides insight into reporting via Solventum and the required dossier quality.
Lecturer

Hilde Malcorps, VG expert at University Hospital Antwerp
Nursing Related Groups Model
In this part of the training, we take a deeper look at the NRG model, a grouping system that classifies nursing care into groups based on the national VG-MZG framework.
Each group, or NRG, represents a collection of care episodes in which similar types of care are delivered to patients. The NRGs form the basis for calculating additional funding through component B2 of the Budget of Financial Resources (BFM).
After a theoretical session covering the structure and logic of the NRG model, ample time is dedicated to examining the impact and analysis of the NRGs using a practical example.
Lecturers

Hilde Malcorps is a Patient Care staff member and VG-MZG coordinator at UZA

Philip Vervliet is a healthcare analytics specialist at Solventum

Tailored to the target audience
This training has been specifically designed for staff members working in policy information. Hospital employees in other roles with an interest in hospital financing and policy data are also welcome, as well as staff from other healthcare organizations who wish to gain insight into these topics.

We also provide a course on this topic for executives, board members and doctors. You can find this course here.
